The Portugieser—formerly Portuguese—is one of IWC’s oldest and best-known series, and it’s where the brand showcases its most prestigious haute horlogerie skills, from perpetual calendars to tourbillons. The line originated in the late 1930s when two Portuguese businessmen asked IWC to make a wristwatch powered by a pocket-watch movement—hence the traditionally large case sizes of the Portugieser. This self-winding Tourbillon Mystère edition in rose gold is a little over 44mm, which allows for an expansive dial that is populated by an open-worked flying tourbillon—unusually positioned at 12 o’clock—as well as a small-seconds subdial and 7-day power reserve display.
